The government authorities, Chinese Road Company and the neighbouring communities living along the Nunow-Madogashe Highway have finally agreed to allow the maintenance and construction works of the halted multi-billion shillings road to proceed.
The new developments come at a time when controversy surrounding the mega project had threatened to halt presidential initiative after the contractors suspended the work citing hostility from the local community. The Chinese Construction Company, Zhongmhei Engineering Co Ltd led by Zheng Fei who is the site manager, had suspended all its operations to allow for the talks between the government and local leaders.
According to the Garissa County commissioner, James Kianda, regional leaders will further pursue the remaining issues touching on corporate and social responsibility in liaison with Kenha.
“We are very happy that the community has finally sat down and agreed to support the road project,” the county commissioner said.
Kianda also said environmental concerns raised by the communities have been noted, with assurance issued on their safety and that of their livestock.
Another source privy to the road work project has said that the six individuals who had been arrested last week over allegations of frustrating the project have been released unconditionally due to insufficient evidence that would have them prosecuted.
