Road builders working with China Henan International Cooperation group, a contractor building Eldoret – Kiplombe – Soy – Kipsangui – Kabenes roads on Tuesday held peaceful demonstrations over poor services and low pay.
The workers marched to the contractor’s offices in Soy Township on Tuesday where they demanded the management of the contractor review payment terms.
“We have not been provided with protective wear by the contractor. Our colleagues who get injured while at work are not taken to hospital by the company and no compensation. We have resolved not to return to work until pay and working conditions are improved,” said Dickson Korir, one of the workers.
The workers claimed that they are paid Sh25 per hour yet the contractor was paid millions of money which will be used to pay them well.
"No operation will be ongoing on the site until our grievances are addressed. We are not donkeys to work with the low pay yet we have families depending on us for food and payment of other bills such as school fees,” added Korir.
