Speaking at Mai-Mahiu town, KeNHA loading manager Isaiah Onsongo blamed the situation on sand harvesting, which he said is weakening sections of the road.

“We are concerned by the situation of the road which could collapse. Sand harvesters who do not have permits will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Onsongo accused sand harvesters of overloading trucks which has led to cracks on major sections of the road. He said the cracks could paralyse transport on the road that connects to major parts of Nakuru and Narok counties.

The manager said a crackdown will be launched soon to arrest individuals and companies that overload sand trucks.

He said a special team of analysts is surveying the road to assess the damage and advice on what action will be taken.

In the meantime, Onsongo said that they are considering suspending sand harvesting to pave way for assessments.
