Hassan Noor, who was vying for the gubernatorial seat in Mandera County has rejected results from last week’s elections.
Noor, who was vying on the Economic Freedom Party lost to the incumbent Ali Roba, who garnered 67,470 votes against Noor’s 57,937.
Noor says the results were interfered with in favour of Roba, further accusing the officials of tampering with the electronic voting system in some areas including Lafey and Banisa.
“There was delay in transmitting the results. Voting was also delayed,” Noor said as quoted by the Star.
“EFP clinched four out of the six National Assembly seats and 15 out of the 30 county assembly seats, which means we are popular in the region,” he added.
Roba went against the overly popular ‘negotiated democracy’ in the Northern region to defend his seat that he won in 2013.
He defied the Banisa Declaration which barred him together with 24 other elected leaders from vying in the polls, mounting a serious campaign against the decision terming it outdated.
He maintained that he had served locals well and was confident he will be re-elected.
He is the only governor from the North region who survived, with all his colleagues; Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, Ahmed Abdullahi (Wajir), Godana Doyo (Isiolo), Ukur Yatani (Marsabit), Hussein Dado (Tana River) and Lamu’s Issa Timamy losing in the just concluded polls.
