A case in which three ‘rogue’ police officers are accused of extorting a bribe from a Thika market vendor and harassing members of the public has today, Wednesday been adjourned by a Thika court.

The three, George Kang’ethe, Peter Gitau, Francis Maina and Virginia Wangari appeared before chief magistrate Martha Mutuku, charged with false pretence contrary to Kiambu County Assembly Acts.

The court heard that on February 18, the three harassed Margaret Wambui, a ‘kiosk’ operator on grounds of selling counterfeit goods.

They allegedly extorted a Sh3,000 bribe and a Sh100 scratch card from Wambui, before harassing another vendor into giving them Sh1,000.

The accused persons also faced another charge of disrupting peace by harassing vendors at the market by using ‘rungus’.

The accused, who pleaded guilty were arrested by police following complaints by the market vendors and irate members of the public.
