Public and private universities engaging in corruption risks having their charters revoked, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has warned.
Matiang’i’s warning comes amidst protests across the country in a number of institutions of higher learning over corruption and nepotism.
The outstanding CS also warned against irregular admission to the institutions insisting that it would also be punished.
“This culture of corruption in our universities must be punished. We cannot allow such behaviors in centres of excellence more so under my leadership,” he said.
“Universities must also ensure only qualified candidates are admitted failure to which they will have their charters revoked,” added Matiang’i.
He also cautioned institutions against rapid expansion without approval from the Commission for University education adding that affected institutions will have their satellite colleges shut down.
Recently, the ministry closed down five campuses affiliated to Kisii University over alleged violation of university statutes.
