Githunguri sub-county residents and community policing stakeholders have been urged to utilise retired police in their activities to boost security.
Lionel Njuguna, the officer in charge of community policing in Githunguri, said community policing has worked effectively in the area as Githunguri residents are working closely with the law enforcement officers.
“Community policing initiatives emphasize a pro-active, problem-solving approach where the police work in close partnership with the community they serve,” Njuguna explained.
“The retired personnel know the areas well and have long security experience.”
Njuguna applauded the recall of retired police to help in community policing, saying they are familiar with their areas of jurisdiction and can work well with the community.
“The retired police should be vetted to ensure that their records are clean. This will ensure transparency in the sector,” he added.
He urged the national government to recognise exemplary performance in the sector, by motivating officers or recognising them during public holidays.
Njuguna said that during the course of their work, the police interact with the community they serve in various ways. In return, the community is reliant upon the police to curb disorder, help in times of emergency and offer security at all times.
He added that the police on the other hand rely on the community to report crime and provide vital information that is necessary to solve wrongdoings and address community security concerns.
