"If you contravene the law, there are consequences, fine and the possibility of imprisonment. I expect the contractors to comply," NCA North Rift regional coordinator Rose Waweru said.

Speaking in Eldoret during a stakeholders meeting, the NCA regional director said they are working out to see ways of improving the construction sector.

She said they have so far inspected 429 buildings.

"Most of the people do not comply with the regulations during construction and when the inspectors found them violating rules the authority do not have the mandate to arrest them which is a big challenge," Ms. Waweru lamented.

"We do not want substandard buildings in Uasin Gishu county," she added.

During the meeting, NCA officials engaged with stakeholders from National environment management (NEMA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority(KURA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA), architects and engineers to discuss on ways to enforce construction regulation and ensure the era of buildings collapsing remains in the past.
