In a news bulletin on KBC on Tuesday, Rotich said the government is in the process of engaging international stakeholders to help find a lasting solution to the looming refugee crisis.

According to Rotich, the huge financial burden on the country is one of the primary reasons the government chose to disband the refugee affairs department which has seen over 600, 000 refugees’ plights hanging in the balance even as the European Union (EU) pointed out that it has disbursed 200 million Euros to help attract voluntary repatriation back to Somalia. He observed that for 30 years, the country had to shoulder the burden brought about by refugee influx into the country.

In the meantime, the UN has condemned Kenya’s decision to close down the Kakuma and Dadaab Refugee Camps. The UN right’s body has called on the government to reconsider its decision saying the move could affect many lives. At the same time, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) has opposed the government’s plan saying that the move is a violation of human rights.

According to KBC radio, since Friday, the government had suspended operations at the refugee affairs department.
