A group of People Living with Disabilities from Uasin Gishu County addressing the press in Eldoret town on August 30, 2017 [PHOTO: JKhisa]A group of people living with disabilities in Uasin Gishu have rejected a recently gazetted list of Nominated Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in the county.The group, led by the National Council of People Living with Disabilities, Uasin Gishu county coordinator Titus Yego and United Development for the disabled officer Regina Chumba, said the list of the nominated MCAs falls short of the constitutional threshold of at least two nominees for the disabled.According to the list published in the Kenya Gazette by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Tuesday, Salina Kosgei was the only one nominated to represent people with disability at the Assembly.The group, however, claimed the nominee is a registered voter in the neighboring Nandi County and does not qualify to represent them in the Uasin Gishu County Assembly."The law provides that people with disabilities be represented by both male and a female nominated MCAs but in this case only one was gazetted by IEBC and even the one gazetted is not a resident of this county," Yego told the press in Eldoret town on Wednesday."We don't know that person. We've checked her details and found out that she's a registered voters in Chesumei constituency, Nandi county which literally means we have no representation at the county Assembly," added Ms. Chumba.The group called for the suspension of the swearing in of the MCAs until their concerns are addressed.They further threatened to take legal actions over the matter."This is a breach of our laws and we will not rest until we have the right representation of people living with disabilities at the County Assembly," Chumba reiterated.
