Several people were on Tuesday evening injured and property worth thousands of shillings looted after rowdy students stormed a market in a revenge an attack.
Students of the Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI) allegedly stormed Muchanganyiko market claiming that two of their colleagues were assaulted at a local bar.
Residents who talked to this writer said more than twenty students, armed with stones, sticks and metal bars physically attacked patrons at a drinking joint at centre along the Nakuru-Subukia road, destroying property.
It is alleged that trouble started after two students of the college who had been drinking at the bar got involved in a brawl.
“The two students were overpowered by other patrons in the bar after they picked up a fight, but they went back to the college to mobilise others who came for revenge. They looted alcohol and destroyed furniture while attacking everyone in sight,” said Charity Wambui, a bartender.
The bar owner, Caleb Kamau, and other residents have petitioned the institute’s management to compensate for the losses incurred after the incident.
When contacted for comment, the dean of students at the institute, Paul Tanui, denied any knowledge of the incident and said his office would investigate the matter.
