More than fifty youth this morning stormed a market construction site and disrupted the exercise accusing the construction company of employing people from outside the area.
Led by the chairman of Mawanga Youth Agenda (MYA) Anthony Waweru, the youth accused local leaders for neglecting the youth while dishing out local resources to outsiders.
The youth group leader said the youth would petition the local Constituency Development Fund (CDF) committee to suspend the project until their complaints were put into consideration.
“It is sad and shameful for us to watch as our resources are being dished out to other people while our youth languish in unemployment. We will not allow that to happen. This project belongs to residents of this area and they must wholly benefit from it,” he said.
The incident caused panic in the area as the construction workers were forced to abandon duty and seek refuge at the Teachers Police Post some 500 metres from the site.
The youth however dispersed as word went around that a contingent of riot police officers from Nakuru Police station had been called in to arrest the rowdy group.
Area Member of Parliament David Gikaria during the groundbreaking for the construction of the market told construction companies to employ local youth in the project.
Already a dispute is in the offing over the allocation of stalls and management of the market pitting two rival groups in the estate.
