Ruiru lawmaker Esther Gathongo has asked locals in the constituency to support the fight against increasing drug and substance abuse among the youth.
Addressing locals at Ruiru town Thursday, the MP stated that alcohol abuse among teenagers is going out of hand.
She said that locals must now work with leaders to tame alcohol abuse which she indicated is literally consuming many teenagers.
“I want to ask Ruiru locals to join hands and tame the drug and substance abuse especially among the youth,” she said.
The MP observed that many families have broken as a result of alcoholism saying there is need for law enforcers to crack the whip on makers and sellers of illicit alcohol.
Gathongo stated that development would never be realized in the area if young people continue to drink themselves silly.
She added that young people spend most of the time and money drinking and smoking harmful substances.
She urged law enforcers to destroy drinking and smoking zones which she stated that most teenagers spend their time.
At the same time, the MP urged the government to ensure young people are occupied to tame crime.
She said that youth are turning to alcohol and crime out of desperation for lacking job opportunities.
“The only way to tame crime is to ensure young people are fully involved in development activities,” Gathogo said.
The MP who also addressed boda boda operators said that the constituency has put aside enough money to promote development.
The MP urged boda boda operators to work with the leaders to ensure security and tame other social problems.
She also urged the operators to apply for soft loans in order to enhance their business ventures.
