The MP said some parts of the area have become unsafe for residents, as cases of people being robbed, mugged and even killed by criminal gangs are on the rise.

Addressing residents in Ruiru Town, Gathongo said it is the responsibility of police officers to ensure the safety of residents.

“We are getting worried by the rise in criminal activities and we urge law enforcers to up their game,” said Gathongo.

She cited an incident where a body of a KCSE candidate from a local secondary school was found dumped near Ruiru police station on Thursday morning.

According to police, the student went missing on Saturday last week before his body, which is reported to have had severe head injuries, was discovered on Thursday.

Angry residents have since accused the police of laxity, saying criminals prowling the area are putting their lives at risk.

“Ruiru is slowly turning into a crime den and the police should do something,” said Peter Mbuthia, a bodaboda operator.

The locals now want the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to intervene in the manner, by transferring officers who are said to have overstayed in the area.

The residents also want police to heighten patrols as a way of taming insecurity, which they say has reached alarming levels.

Reacting to the claims, Ruiru Sub-County Commanding Officer Mr Christopher Kimiti assured residents that security will be streamlined.

He said investigations into a series of crime reported in the area are underway.
