Traffic police in Ruiru on Thursday arrested 16 pedestrians for failing to use footbridges along Thika Road hence risking their lives by crossing in undesignated points.
This comes two days after a middle-aged woman was hit by a speeding matatu just under the footbridge as she tried to cross the road.
Area traffic base commander Daniel Sambi said that cases of people losing their lives along the busy highway were on the rise while revealing that 21 people had lost their lives since January as a result of ignoring the footpaths, commonly referred to as flyovers.
"I want to send a warning to pedestrians along Thika superhighway to ensure they use the flyovers at all times. It is not a matter of the police to tell you, it is for your own good. We are going to arrest those who ignore this rule and they will face the wrath of the law," he said.
He said matatu operators who allow passengers to alight at undesignated places encourage such offenses.
