Following increased mugging cases, police in Ruiru have cautioned Gwa-Kairu area residents against using the railway underpass during late hours as it continues to pose a security threat.

Addressing the press in his office on Tuesday, Ruiru OCPD Isaac Thuranira said that there has been a number of reported mugging cases at the scene. This has made them intensify patrols in the area to help in bringing to book those behind the attacks.

“We have deployed patrol units to the area since last week. I wish to inform those behind the attacks reported that their days are numbered and the law will soon catch up with them. A number of suspects have been arrested and are being interrogated,” Thuranira said.

The underpass that links Gwa-Kairu market and the Thika bus stage is dark at night with no lights installed. This has given criminals a hide out to carry on their unlawful activities during the late hours.

A number of people from the area have been attacked and robbed off their valuables. Others risk their lives to cross the ten laneThika Super-Highway to avoid using the underpass fearing being mugged.

One month ago the area residents took law into their hands and burnt alive a man who they suspected of being among the group attacking them at the underpass.

This incident was followed by a decrease in the number of cases reported from the scene. The cases are now slowly escalating again.
