Lang'ata and Karen estates will be the hardest hit areas in the Southern parts of the city.

City Park, Pangani, Gumba, Huruma, Mlango Kubwa, Runda and Gigiri have also been listed as the areas to expect a high level of shortages.

Nairobi East, Nairobi central, and Nairobi West regions will also be part of the rationing.

According to County Water executive Peter Kimori, the prolonged drought in Kikuyu, Aberdares, and Mt Kenya regions has led to the drastic reduction in water levels at the Ndakaini Dam which is the city's main water reservoir.

"We are urging Nairobians to understand us. These are natural causes that we do not have control over. We urge them to only use water on necessary matters like drinking and cooking," he said.

"Others like washing cars and water flower gardens should be shelved or they use recycled water," he added.

Kimori however notes that to key facilities such as schools and hospitals will be considered since they cannot operate without water.

"If it does not rain in the near future, then I can tell you for sure we are in trouble. Some people have started sending me obscene messages but they need to understand," he said.
