Thika West sub-county Agricultural Officer John Nyaga has warned Rurie farmers in Makongeni against using unorthodox means to grow their crops.
Speaking from his office on Thursday, Nyaga revealed that his office has been receiving unconfirmed reports that farmers in the area have been using effluents and sewage from the nearby factories and homes to grow their crops.
"We have disbursed three agricultural officers in the area to track the source of water used by the said farmers," said Nyaga.
He added: "In the meantime let me request the farmers in that area who may be using the unaccepted farming practices to immediately stop."
However, the farmers have rejected the allegations saying they have drilled small holes where they source their irrigation water from.
"That is a narrative that residents living around this area have been perpetuating for a long time. None of them can prove," Simon Njoroge, a kale and spinach farmer said.
Pius Mwai who grows tomatoes welcomed Nyaga's move saying it will clear the air once and for all. "Let them come and investigate so that people can know the water we use here is not what they claim to be," he said.
