In most of his public rallies however, Raila has often dismissed claims that the handshake has something to do with 2022 politics.

"It has nothing to do with 2022. We have seen elections in this country so 2022 is not special in any manner," he said on Tuesday.

With DP William Ruto sidelined from the unity deal, a number of his allies are now crying foul that the former Prime Minister is taking advantage of the handshake t undermine Ruto.

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen said Raila's relationship with Jubilee is insincere and should be audited.

"There is no doubt that he sees Ruto as his competitor. He is trying to be cosy with the president but at the same time hostile to the DP. This is perfect example of divisive politics," he said.

His Nandi counterpart Samson Cherargei said: "They know Ruto is going to be president and that is why they are sneaking referendum to block his way by introducing Prime Minister position."

Despite supporting Uhuru-Raila pact, Ruto has however rejected attempts to change the constitution.

When addressing ODM delegates at Naivasha, Raila insisted that the structure of the country's governance must be changed.
