Deputy President William Ruto is reportedly working round the clock to ensure Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero retains the seat despite being in a rival camp.
In unlikely turn of events, the DP is said to be worried with Jubilee’s intentions to have former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth win the seat.
Even though President Uhuru Kenyatta publicly denied endorsing Kenneth for the top seat, a source from Mr. Kidero's camp says the DP is aware of the plot to position Kenneth for the city job.
“I am confident Kidero shall carry the day. The infightings in Jubilee may not end soon because even the DP is in our camp,” said the source who spoke in confidence due to sensitivity of the issue.
The official further said: “I think he is uncomfortable with Kenneth because of 2022 elections. By being Governor of Nairobi, it will be an added advantage to him. The DP doesn’t want him at all.”
Although Jubilee party is yet to nominate governorship contest, a fierce contest however, is expected between Kenneth and Nairobi senator Mike Mbuvi.
Recently, the Star reported that Mr. Sonko rejected an offer from Jubilee government where he was told to step down in favour of Kenneth and get a cabinet slot.
