Deputy President William Ruto led the department of Internal Security in destroying 5,250 illicit small arms and light weapons in Ngong, Kajiado county, Tuesday.
He said the weapons were recovered from criminals, some were surrendered while some were obtained through forceful disarmament.
Flanked by Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, Ruto said small arms pose a serious threat to Kenya's peace and stability as they are easily available, cheap, simple to handle and conceal.
"We are destroying small arms and ammunition so that they don’t fall on wrong hands that will cause harm in society. This ceremony signals the beginning of greater peace and security in Kenya and the region," Ruto said during the event.
Nkaissery further assured Kenyans of their security, and emphasised that no one will be allowed to illegally own fire arms.
