The fact that majority of Kenyans and the country’s political folk want IEBC commissioners out of office means they cannot hold credible elections in 2017, Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has said.
Ruto said the only cure for the country is to have the IEBC gone.
"The IEBC must go for there to be a peaceful nation. We must agree with that and move forward,” the URP governor said on Saturday.
Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga during a Saturday rally in Nakuru said the opposition will hold demonstrations against the electoral body on Monday and Thursday.
Odinga accused the IEBC of rigging the 2013 presidential election results in favour of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“How comes there were some 2 million people who only voted for the President and not other elective posts?” Odinga posed.
Meanwhile, Western diplomats held meetings with Cord leaders on Saturday in a bid to broker a deal on IEBC stalemate in order to avert the planned Monday demos.
US Ambassador Robert Godec met the clergy, businesses community leaders, Cord members Siaya senator James Orengo, his Machakos counterpart Johnstone Muthama and Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu on Saturday to discuss the impasse.
Cord has insisted that the talks to remove IEBC chiefs must take place outside Parliament, something Jubilee leaders have dismissed, saying it's unconstitutional and will not be allowed.
