Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday surprised residents of Turbo when he made a stop-over in the shanty town and had lunch at a grass-thatched hotel.
The DP was on his way to Eldoret after attending a mass organised by 16 churches at Jua Kali grounds in Turbo constituency.
Social media was a buzz with comments as a section of Kenyans acknowledged how down-to-earth the DP was as others criticized him of taking advantage of the poverty that bedevils Kenyans to market the Jubilee administration ahead of the 2017 elections.
Those who criticised him said his decision to have lunch at the hotel only qualified as a public relations tactic aimed at marketing Jubilee.
Surprisingly, the DP had the meal at the mud-walled hotel a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited a family living in a semi-permanent house in Ndigu-ini village when he launched the Last Mile Connectivity Project in Kiambu County.
Uhuru was in company of Governor William Kabogo and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wa.
In pictures posted on the DP's official Facebook account, a lady is seen serving him and Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago with boiled chicken.
He is after the meal seen sharing light moments with the hotel owner and residents of Turbo town.
As he dined inside the rum-shackled house, security cordoned off the area.
Ruto later addressed the residents where he told the opposition to use the right channel in their quest to disband the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
"We want to tell our competitors that we are doing our work within the framework of the law,” Ruto said.
He told Cord led by Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula to respect the new Constitution by following due process of the law in sending the electoral body's commissioners home.
