Deputy President William Ruto has been drawn into the ongoing crisis targeting the embattled Electoral Commission IEBC with two MCAs accusing him of misleading the president.
The DP on Wednesday, during Madaraka Day celebrations, dismissed hopes of the opposition sitting down with government over a structured dialogue on the commission maintaining that the constitutional provisions had to be followed.
But Nyamira assembly Majority whip Peter Maroro and his counterpart Deputy Majority Leader James Mating’a believes that Ruto has been the ‘obstacle’ to genuine dialogue over the embattled commission.
“I watched the DP speaking at Afraha and I must say he is the barrier for constructive dialogue. He insists on using the constitutional provisions which he understands that cannot work under the current set of the National assembly,” Maroro said after Madaraka Day celebrations.
“The President seems to be willing to sit with the opposition but unfortunately the DP is taking the hard stand for no good reason. It’s time that he drops the hard stand and pave way for dialogue,” he added.
Mating’a on his part urged President Kenyatta to be a ‘statesman’ and allow dialogue with the opposition for the sake of stability in the country.
“Kenya is bigger than any individual. From the look of things, the DP seems to be the one dragging us behind. The other day Uhuru called the opposition and a day after Ruto makes the State House meeting look useless. Time has come for us to embrace dialogue if we want to get out of this limbo,” he said.
