Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday oversaw the destruction of 5,250 illegal firearms by setting them ablaze.
The seized firearms and small weapons were burned at Ngong’ hills in Kajiado County.
Ruto said the move by the government to burn the weapons aims at improving security levels in Kajiado County and all over the nation.
He said the weapons have been a great contributing factor to security threats like carjacking, cattle rustling and other forms of robbery.
He said such weapons have led to many deaths during cattle rustling and inter-community conflicts.
“Their presence also poses a great risk on our wildlife as they facilitate illegal poaching activities,” said Ruto.
The weapons are the ones seized by security forces during security operations and also those surrendered voluntarily by owners.
“This will help alleviate security levels in our country," said the Deputy President.
