Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nakuru, the deputy president said that Cord leaders should respect the rule of law and address their concerns as postulated in the New Constitution of Kenya 2010.

“We allowed Cord to hold a rally at Uhuru Park because we are a government that respect the rule of law. In the same manner we want the Cord principals to call off the demonstrations,” said Mr Ruto.

He said that they acknowledged the court ruling by Judge George Odunga that allowed Cord to hold their Madaraka Day rally at Uhuru Park amid contentions raised by the church ministries that had earlier booked the venue for national prayers.

Cord had earlier called off the demonstrations to force IEBC out of office in a move to give dialogue a chance.

On Tuesday, Cord leader Raila Odinga and his co-principal Moses Wetangula met president Uhuru Kenyatta at statehouse in a move that was seen as a stepping stone to initiate dialogue with the government on the IEBC stand off.
