Deputy President William Ruto has urged Kiambu farmers to venture into farming during the rainy season to eradicate starvation come 2015.
Ruto said that Kenya is moving towards industrialisation but we should not forget that farming is our main economic activity and thus it should be embraced whole heartedly.
Speaking on Thursday during the launching of botanical garden in Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the DP said Kiambu is known for its contribution of farm produce in Kenya and thus farmers should start planting before the rain disappears.
Ruto said that Jubilee government cannot employ every individual in the country and thus youth should as well venture into Agriculture as their source of income.
“We cannot employ all of you however much we try, thus you should try and venture into agriculture as a source of income,” he said.
He challenged the JKUAT students that with the launching of the botanical garden, he expects to come and witness the innovation in agriculture as he has witnessed with the engineering.
Ruto said that the project will contribute to the national heritage and culture by increasing the number of conservation programmes of endangered species which is prioritized in vision 2030.
“This botanical garden that you have established will contribute to the national heritage and culture by increasing the number of conservation programs the government has started of an endangered species,” said the deputy president.
He said that his government is willing to embrace all sectors of economic development and urged the students to come up with rare species that Kenya can accommodate.
The project is on 40 acre piece of land within JKUAT grounds.
