Deputy President William Ruto has warned leaders against politicising development projects for their own selfish interests.
Speaking at Mkunguni grounds in Lamu on Monday, Ruto said that the projects are meant to improve the country’s economy and boost people’s lives.
The DP urged leaders to desist from negative politics that jeopardise the economy of the country by scaring away donors and investors.
Ruto further rubbished claims by the Lamu Women Rep Shakilla Abdalla who had earlier said that the Lamu coal project was harmful to residents.
“Some people believe in politics of impoverishing the masses so they can lead or remain relevant. We should do away with this and support projects that help Kenyans,” said Ruto, as quoted by the Standard.
The DP said the coal project was assessed by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) before its implementation.
He added that the project will open up the northern frontier of Kenya as well as boost the country's power generation capacity.
