A Kisii Don believes acquittal of Deputy President William Ruto by International Criminal Court will give him more time to settle and focus on his political future.
Ruto was linked to the deadly post-election violence in 2007/08 elections that led to his five-year battle in ICC with prosecutors in a bid to clear his name.
But historian and political scientist Professor Nyachieo Bogonko said the marriage between President Uhuru and his Deputy was based on the ICC factor which has since ended.
“I am seeing endless troubles in Jubilee government now that the DP is free to move across the country without any hindrance,” Bogonko said in Wednesday’s phone interview.
“He is a go-getter and the fact that the 2013 union with Kenyatta’s camp was based on ICC, things are going to change drastically," said Bogonko.
"He will fight for his relevance in Kenyan politics and Kenyatta should not fully depend on Ruto’s support,” he said.
Bogonko said Ruto will get more pressure from his Kalenjin backyard to demand a 50-50 government share and will also seek to know who dragged his name to ICC that led to his five years battle at the highest court on earth.
“He (Ruto) will not be basically happy with the government because some key individuals from President Kenyatta’s tribe were linked to his fixation at ICC. He will do something in return,” he added.
“Ruto will also get more pressure from his community which has openly defied him in the past to go for more shares in the government," said the professor.
"These are among the things which will really trouble this government. How Kenyatta will handle him, will tell whether Jubilee will overcome trying moments,” he said.
