Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has called for peaceful coexistence along the Nyamira-Bomet border, a region that has witnessed ethnic clashes in the past three days.
At least one person died on Tuesday as ethnic clashes between the Abagusii and Kipsigis communities intensified at along the Borabu-Sotik constituencies with leaders from both sides calling for a ceasefire following cattle rustling accusations and counter accusations.
Speaking on Wednesday at the site of the clashes, Ruto urged both sides to embrace peace for the sake of prosperity.
“We are brothers and sisters and it’s absolutely backward for us to fight over small issues which can be solved. We should try as much as possible to live peacefully without intimidating one another,” he said.
The Chama cha Mashinani leader added: “let us end this cattle rustling menace. It’s a primitive act that should not be allowed to let people lose their lives. I once again call upon elders from both sides to join all leaders in looking for an amicable solution.”
The region has been experiencing clashes since the early 90s during the tribal clashes area leaders have been involved for a number of occasions in trying to find amicable solutions.
