Deputy President William Ruto has called on leaders from the pastoral communities to work to find solutions to challenges facing them.

Speaking on Sunday in Mombasa, Ruto said the issues facing the counties can be solved if they all work together without looking at their political affiliations.

“People are viewing pastoralists as people who have denied their children the opportunity to go to school, people who are riddled with poverty or conflicts. We need to change this perception,” Ruto said.

He further challenged the counties not to complain about being marginalized, as they have a role to play in ensuring they catch up with the rest of the country.

“What is clear is that all those children who are not in school are those from the pastoral areas. We must not deny our children the chance to go to school. We must be forthright about such issues,” he added.

During the same meeting, Garissa Township MP Aden Duale demanded that the pastoral communities account for over Sh200 billion they have received in the last five years.

He said the communities are lagging behind partly because of poor allocation of funds and misuse of resources allocated by the national government.
