National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Sabina Chege has said Moi University Council should be disbanded following recent riots against the acting Vice Chancellor Prof Laban Ayiro.
Prof Ayiro was appointed by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on September 19 after the university council handed in three names to the CS.
Chege argued that the University council should be held accountable for leaking information on the appointment of the VC before it was officially made public.
“If a council conducts an interview, then how does that interview, which is supposed to be confidential, come to the public? Let us not divide this country,” stated Chege.
Chege spoke at Amboseli Institute in Kiambu County, insisting that the new appointments to the council should not be tribal based.
“It doesn’t matter where you come from; we should give everybody a chance and embrace professionalism and actually separate politics from education. If we take the direction I have seen us taking, then our education will be in jeopardy. These are national institutions, not regional institutions,” said Chege.
A section of North Rift leaders and local residents stormed the university on September 20, demanding the appointment of Prof Isaac Kosgey as vice chancellor.
