"The cooperative will invest over Sh300 million in the first phase of the Nyumba Mia initiative in Lanet area of Nakuru with a 100 members benefiting from a three-bed roomed house each. The project will be completed in the next eight months," said the Sacco chairman Samuel Maina.

Briefing the press after a ground breaking ceremony in Lanet on Saturday, Maina further said after the completion of the first phase, the Sacco will embark on putting up low-cost housing in Nakuru for its members to ensure that all members from all classes are catered for.

He said the initiative intends to adopt the gated community housing concept where members share social amenities such as roads, electricity ,playing ground and water and also promote ‘Nyumba Kumi” security concept to ensure the members live peacefully and harmoniously.

The chairman said the Sacco has implemented the “Nyumba Mia” housing concept in other areas such as Mombasa, Kiambu, Embu and Nairobi and intends to extend the same to the 47 counties in the country as the initiative has proved successful.

He said Nakuru as a cosmopolitan county was relevant for the initiative which he said was also committed to promoting peaceful co-existence.
