Parents at public primary schools now want the government to sack all the teachers following the continued spate of strikes in the country.
The parents said that they were constantly putting the government to ransom which in turn affected the school calendar.
“Every year they go on strike indicating that the children do not learn as much as they should. They are intimidating the government each and every time. There are very many graduates out there without jobs who are willing to earn a living by teaching. The only way to stop this drama is to sack them all,” said Jane Cherotich, a parent
She cited that the continuous interruption of the children learning pattern and creating unnecessary trauma to the children involved.
Milka Wangari called on the government to advertise the teaching positions saying that there are qualified people who have never been employed.
“We agree they play a major role in the upbringing of individuals but must they always harass and intimidate the government? Don’t our children have the right to learn comfortably? Why do they go on strike when the school term opens and not before? If they are seeking for the extension of the holiday, they should indicate so instead of posing as if they were on a strike,” she added.
The nationwide teachers strike entered its fourth day on Thursday with the government and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) failing to reach an agreement over the pay rise demands.
