Sacked Karuturi flower farm workers in Naivasha are now demanding Sh227million from their former employer as the final dues.
This came even as workers lashed out at Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) for failing to address their plight three months after the flower farm was placed under receivership.
The irate workers accused the union and its Secretary General Francis Atwoli of targeting their monthly deductions but failing to defend their rights.
The farm chief shop-steward Samson Ounda Adayo said the workers were owed Sh227 million by the farm whose value stood at Sh10 billion in April.
He expressed concern over the slow manner in which the liquidation case was taking as the workers continued to suffer.
“Our biggest challenge is the manner in which the court is treating this case as the workers who have no other source of livelihood continue to suffer,” he said.
This emerged when Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua donated food stuff to tens of starving families.
Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Esther Njeri said the county would be taking up the issue and seek ways of assisting them saying that some men are taking advantage of the suffering women and girls.
“The closure of the farm marks the darkest moment for Naivasha with tens of families suffering for other people’s mistakes and it is time their dues were settled,” she said.
