Three people have been swept away by raging floods in Isiolo County as heavy rains continue in different parts of the country.
Isiolo County Commissioner John Ondego who confirmed the incidents said a 30-year-old man, an unidentified person and an 11-girl-old child from Badana, Garbatulla Sub County drowned following the heavy downpour.
Mr. Ondego said the three died after they were swept away by floods adding that their bodies have been discovered and taken to the mortuary.
“Three people have died after being swept away by flood waters in the county. No resident has been displaced by the heavy rains but some roads in Merti Sub-County have been rendered impassable,” said Mr. Ondego.
The county commissioner further said that on Sunday, students from different schools attending a sports tournament were stranded after heavy downpour rendered some roads impassable and the county government sent a truck to take the students home.
Mr. Ondego appealed to the residents to relocate to higher grounds until the rains subside and to be on the lookout when crossing rivers or flooded sections of roads.
On Thursday, one person was killed in the county after he was swept away while crossing over a culvert in Soko Mjinga area.
Isiolo Deputy Governor Ibrahim Issa said that heavy rains left behind a trail of destruction in the county adding that more property could be lost if the rains continue.
Mr. Issa said that the county government will look into the town plan to mitigate such disasters in future as he urged residents whose houses are built along water paths to relocate to safer grounds.
“There is poor planning in town, people are constructing buildings along water paths hence diverting the floodwaters into residential houses,” he added.
