Safaricom boss Bob Collymore has urged Dadaab and Kakuma refugees to make use of education to unchain themselves out of the unpleasant camp situations, disclosing that leaders and like-minded citizens need to accept and integrate refugees into their societies.
Speaking during a remote mentorship class to Dadaab-based students, Collymore issued that those seeking asylum, majority of whom are women and young children, were just victims of larger societal conflicts and do not in any way choose their state.
"It is not a matter of how the society views refugees; but it is about dignity and human rights. We really do not realize that we have a lot within the refugee camps and all we just see is the darker side of it and it is high time we reverse the trend," said the CEO.
Collymore said refugee status required urgent response from all stakeholders, and as well a collective action to curb conflict.
He added that Safaricom will help empower youths in the camps with learning resources and motivation so as to ensure they can make tangible impacts to their present camp lives.
"Safaricom will use the popular instant school for Africa initiative in empowering all young people living in the refugee camps and also motivate them so that they get to appreciate themselves, for they surely need dignity," he added.
