Mobile service provider Safaricom has been given seven days to submit a report on Monday’s network failure.

Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) director general Francis Wangusi has said that he had already received an interim report on the incident awaiting a detail brief before deciding the fate of the firm.

Speaking on Wednesday, Wangusi further revealed the extent of the penalties.

“The penalties range from Sh500,000 to 0.2 per cent of their gross turnover depending on the impact that the contravention has made to the status of the economy of the country,” said Wangusi.

The fines will be imposed only if the regulator finds evidence of negligence.

The interim report suggests a technical failure occurred during the 2-hour outage.

On Monday morning, Safaricom customers were unable to call, text or send money via M-Pesa.
