Safaricom officially announced the launch of its e-commerce portal, Masoko on Tuesday that will aim to provide local merchants with an online platform to sell their products and services.

Masoko, (Swahili for ‘markets’) will provide customers with a variety of access to items ranging from groceries to books, auto parts, clothing, the latest technology and everyday essentials.

The director stated that they are are currently starting with close to 200 vendors offering over 20,000 products.

“By leveraging the strength and reach of our network, our customer base, and a number of partnerships with vendors, we hope to create a solution that can power the next phase of growth for the Kenyan economy,” said Mr. Ogutu.

A customer care team will also be available to manage any queries from customers, while a wide-ranging returns policy will ensure that all purchases meet the expectations of the customer.

Mobile money payments as well as Visa and MasterCard payments will be accepted by the online portal and will work with partners, Wells Fargo and Sendy to provide delivery services to their purchasers
