Preparations for the 34th edition of Safaricom Mombasa International Marathon are in top gear ahead of the event to be held on 24th September in Mombasa. Last year’s winners Paul Maina and Nancy Jebet will be among the over 1,000 local and international athletes expected to participate in the event under the Safaricom Athletics Series Banner. Registration for the race which is taking place at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium closes on Friday. This year’s 42Kms winners will walk away with Shs 400,000 each while those who cross the finish line first in the 10Kms race will each pocket Shs 40,000. Safaricom has set aside Shs 2.5 million towards sponsorship for the event. “We are committed to ensuring that we give a platform to our athletes to hone their skills through the different athletics events that take place in different parts of the country under the Safaricom Athletics Series,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Director – Consumer Business, Safaricom. Other upcoming races in the Series include: Kericho Road Race, Isaiah Kiplagat Memorial – Ndalat, Madoka Half Marathon, Imenti South Road Race and the Kisumu County National Marathon which will wind up this year’s edition in December.
