[Photo/courtesy]Safaricom has launched the first ever telecommunication lab aimed at assisting the fast-tracking of deployment of new technology and solutions, serve as a training centre for new engineers and those working on new technologies, as well as a testing ground for new ideas that can be developed into new telecommunication solutions.“In the last five years, Safaricom has put in place various measures to attract, retain and develop world-class local talent in the telecommunications sector. The launch of this research and development lab, the first in the region, is a step towards shifting the country from simply being an importer of telecommunication solutions to one that also creates such solutions,” said the firm’s technology director Thibaud Rerolle in a press release.Upon testing new solutions at the centre, they’ll be expected to be sold to mobile operators globally. Tech companies such as Nokia, Huawei and Cisco contributed expertise and donated equipment to the setting up of the Waiyaki Way-based lab, which is estimated to have been put up at a cost of Sh200 million.
