Opposition chief Raila Odinga's adviser Salim Lone has denied claims that the former prime minister said he will support Deputy President William Ruto's presidential candidature in 2022.
Lone said on Friday that Raila was quoted by the media out of context and the fourth estate missed the humour that accompanied Raila's statement.
"Mr Odinga was joking. He was saying that the only way Mr Ruto could win the presidency would be with his support– meaning something that, like a pig flying, that could never happen. The media missed the humour and reported it as a serious remark," Lone said through is official Facebook page.
"He was using humour to highlight the impossibility of Mr Ruto thinking he might be president in 2022. I can now confirm, having just talked to Mr Odinga, that he was not telling his arch opponent that he could support him."
Mainstream media on Wednesday reported that Raila had offered to help Ruto ascend to the presidency in 2022.
“Does Ruto think he can be a President without Raila?” he posed at Kedowa, Kipkelion East.
“I can help him get there if he wants.”
