Police in Mt Elgon constituency, Bungoma County have arrested a 53-year-old woman who allegedly stole a one and half month-old baby.

Gladys Awiti, as she was later identified, works as a salonist at Cheptais shopping centre.

Popularly referred to as sweetie, Ms Awiti was handcuffed by police officers on Tuesday after members of the public tipped the police that the accused had acquired a baby under mysterious circumstances.

The residents claimed that they had known her to be barren and wondered where she had got the child without having been pregnant.

It is said the woman went ahead to call her friends and relatives telling them that she had finally delivered after a long waiting duration.

According to Cheptais location Chief Moses Chemwoyo the police are still investigation the matter.

He also urged the residents to be patient and allow police to do their work effectively.

He called on anyone who has lost a child or heard someone asking about a missing child in the area. However, Awiti distanced herself from accusations.

"I swear before the living God that this child is mine. I cannot steal a baby at all. I gave birth to this child at my house with my husband by the name Peter Kimani who is no longer with me. We parted ways long ago while I was still pregnant," she said.
