A self-help group from Sameta area in Kisii has lauded the county government for helping it to acquire a title deed that has been a major shortcoming in their work.
Sameta Enterprise Group has been facing a major test to retain a 4-hactare piece of land that had been claimed by unscrupulous businessman who had allegedly started developing the land with the help of powerful individuals from the Ministry of Lands in Kisii.
On Sunday, the group, through area MCA Evans Siko managed secured a title deed after the county government intervened and solved the matter in which a senior lands official was suspended waiting for investigations.
“The county has done us proud by dealing with the official (name withheld due to investigations) who has been siding with the developer. Getting a title deed meant that we will develop the land soon and this is a relief from our county government,” said chairman Peter Mosoku.
They called for prosecution of other land officials in the county government who have been allegedly liaising with land grabbers to issue title deeds without following the due process.
“Suspending just one official isn’t a big deal. We have very many land cartels in the county government and the governor should start unleashing as soon as now,” he added.
Mr Siko termed the land ownership challenge as a ‘catastrophe’ that the county government needed to act on urgently to help the poor from losing their genuine land to cartels.
