Speaking on Thursday during a ‘baraza’ meeting area assistant chief, Simon Musyoka, said that sand business had brought more destruction than benefits to the residents.

“There are harvesters who are carrying out the exercise without any consultations and approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) or any other legal institutions. We will not allow our environment to get destroyed. The riverbeds have been left with no sand to hold the water. This will be worse if the business continues,” said Musyoka.

Musyoka further said that most affected areas is Miondoni village where rivers are drying up.

The angry residents threatened to bar lorries collecting sand in the area.

Residents further blamed sand harvesting for the numerous school drop outs in the area. Most boys in the area has dropped out of school in search of quick money.
