The County Executive member for Environment has assured the public that sand harvesting in the county is done in the right way.
He said there was no need to panic over destruction of rivers.
Anthony Saisi has said that sand harvesting in the county is done on the river beds and not the banks, pointing to recent claims that the exercise was being done on river banks.
"Our study has revealed that sand harvesting on rivers has its way of being done thus not on the banks but on the river bed. This way, the aquatic life of the water body is not threatened," said Mr Saisi.
Saisi who was speaking in Kisumu during the county service delivery board meeting on Tuesday said there are plans to have designated areas along rivers where harvesting should be done.
"We are planning to have individual farms where harvesting should be done. In this case there should be an agreement between harvesters and land owners where they will be following sand harvesting guidelines," added Saisi.
Saisi said the county government is in the process of changing sad harvesting guidelines into law so as to prosecute those who do not carry out the exercise in the right manner.
