Residents of Mbembani location in Yatta sub-county have come out to air their losses all blamed on illegal sand harvesting in the area.
Speaking on Sunday during a meeting congregated in Mbembani market, the area chief Josphat Sila condemned the activity stating even the area health centre was up for closure.
"Since we have illegalised the sand harvesting but lorries are still getting sand we are uniting as residents to ensure no sand harvesting activity takes place. I have received information that Mbembani health centre is facing closure possibility due to unbearable dust and bad roads which is a loss to the community," said Sila.
The residents who had gathered together on Sunday explain their grievances.
"We have started businesses but people prefer going shopping in Matuu town because of piled dust. The same situation is in our homes that are next to the roads that have been completely destroyed by the sand lorries," said Mutua a resident of Kivingoni.
This comes even after the Yatta Constituency Member of Parliament among other leaders banned sand harvesting in the area.
According to the residents everyday over 100 lorries ferry sand from Mbembani area.
