Businesses along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa road at Mlolongo came to a standstill during the better part of Monday morning, following demonstrations by sand transporters and residents.
The transporters blocked the busy high way near the weighbridge and parked their Lories in the middle of the road, causing heavy traffic jam along the highway as the protestors entirely blocked the road.
The transporters demonstrated due to the police blocking the adjacent feeder roads to the high way.
They accused the police at the weighbridge for demanding bribes from them and for encouraging corruption at the weighbridge.
The police said that the sand transporters used the feeder roads to escape from passing through the weighbridge to make payments, hence they decided to block it.
The anti-riot police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and clear the traffic jam, which had started to build up.
