In the project, Sanergy will construct and give away the toilets to business people in the slum who will charge for use and in exchange the company will get the human wastes, which they will convert into electricity.

The group comprising of recent MIT graduates came up with the idea that has now grown into a business called Sanergy.

By taking a market-based approach, the group reckons that they can create a sustainable model that will not only create a lasting solution to the sanitation problems but also generate jobs and income for local people.

Sanergy hopes to install over 6,000 toilets, reaching the approximately 600,000 slum residents.

Each toilet will cost about $450 which the local entrepreneurs will fund with their own money or through a loan from microfinance organisations.

The entrepreneurs will then earn by charging for-use fees, signing up local residents for membership plans, and also by selling additional hygiene products.

The project is now being piloted in Kwa Ruben and Kwa Njenga slums before it scales up to the expansive Kibera slums.
