Kenya Film Classification Board chairperson Ezekiel Mutua has criticized Sauti Sol's new hit song 'Melanin' for its explicit scenes.
According to Mutua, the song is '“absolute pornography” and “scatological, intellectual incapacitation and a tragedy of monumental proportions”.
As a result Mutua has opted to seek a court order banning the song from being aired.
He further expressed his disappointment with the music group stating that they are a talented band but they are lacking new ideas.
“I have watched the video, the scenes are inappropriate and it’s full of nudity, obscenity and it should be saved for watershed period,” he said. “Sauti Sol is taking the wrong direction, defying the norms and expectations of the society, they don’t know that they can still be famous without being obscene,” he said.
The song is set to be reviewed by the board to verify whether or not it will require legal action.
“The elements that we look at are the frequency, intensity, nudity and obscenity and Sauti sol’s is adult rated,” he said.
Mutua went on to highlight how their previous song 'Nishike' drew a lot of controversy and was in danger of also being banned.
“Nishike was also condemned, Kenya is not a religious state but over 80% of Kenyans are conservatives, you cannot watch with your mother or your daughter that song, it is not suitable for family viewing” he said.
